In Japan, Zippo lighters are sold at the big electronics stores, some home centres and Zippo specialist shops, and Zippo Japan lists 51 of them.1 Flints and small cans of fluid turn up in convenience stores too, but the wick is harder to find. You can fly home with one Zippo in your pocket and no fluid,2 and the smok.to map shows the tobacconists near you.

Convenience stores: 7-Eleven lists genuine Zippo flints, six for ¥610.50, and 133 ml Zippo fluid at ¥1,204.50 as sold nationwide (tax included, September 2026), but says not every store carries them.8 9 We found no Zippo lighter on 7-Eleven’s website.

The wick is the hard one: Marukai doesn’t list convenience stores for it, so try a home centre, a Yodobashi Camera or a Zippo specialist.4 Yodobashi.com shows which of its stores have it in stock.6

The Yodobashi branches on the list include Akiba (Akihabara), Shinjuku East, Shinjuku West, Ueno, Kichijoji and Yokohama around Tokyo, and Umeda (Osaka), Kyoto, Hakata and Sapporo further afield.1

Bic Camera: not on the list, but it sells Zippos. Plain #200, #205 and #207 models were ¥3,960 on BicCamera.com, against ¥4,260 for a #207 on Yodobashi.com (tax included, September 2026).10 11 Bic Camera handles tax-free sales at its stores.12

The official online shop: Marukai’s own shop sells a plain #207 for ¥5,610.13 14 It sells online only, so it can’t sell tax-free: that needs your passport, shown in the shop.15

Don Quijote: its website lists no Zippo products, so we couldn’t confirm what its stores stock. If you’re going anyway, ask at the counter.

Japanese Zippos and anime Zippos

What “Japan-only” really means

No Zippo is made in Japan. Zippo says every windproof lighter is made at its factory in Bradford, Pennsylvania, and the only other place Zippos were ever produced, Zippo Canada in Niagara Falls, Ontario, closed in July 2002.16 17

A “Japanese” Zippo is one of two things: a Bradford-made Zippo decorated in Japan, or a design sold only in Japan. Makers say so in the specification: Philia’s listing for its Lycoris Recoil Zippo gives the material as brass made by Zippo USA, and the processing as Japan.18 Marukai calls its Harley-Davidson line a Japanese original design, sold only in Japan and finished in Japan.19

The craft pieces are where the Japanese work shows: dragons, tigers, koi and kanji, maki-e lacquer Zippos at ¥19,800–22,000, and electroformed metal plates from ¥11,000.23 The official shop is online only; to see Japanese designs in person, ask the shops on Zippo Japan’s store list.

Anime Zippo lighters: who makes them and where they sell

Most anime and character Zippos are made by Japanese character-goods companies under licence from the rights holder, not by Zippo or Marukai, though Marukai’s shop resells many of them.24 28 29 They also sell through the maker’s own online shop, the rights holder’s store (EVANGELION STORE, or Donguri Republic for Studio Ghibli) and Animate, the anime-goods chain, whose online listings offer pickup in its stores.20 30 31

New licensed anime Zippos from 2025–26 cost about ¥12,800–19,778, against ¥5,610 for a plain #207 at the official shop.32 33 14 Many are sold by pre-order that closes before release: the Kitaro Zippo, due on 9 November 2026, already shows no stock on Animate.33 Stock moves fast, so check on the day.

One Piece, JoJo, Demon Slayer: we found no current official Zippo for One Piece, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, Detective Conan or Dragon Ball in September 2026. Searches turn up Zippo-compatible outer cases, sold empty, and Zippo-style lighters instead.

What a licensed one shows: a named maker, the rights holder’s copyright line, and a case made by Zippo or a Zippo guarantee card in the box. Happy Labo’s Lupin listing, for example, includes Zippo’s lifetime guarantee card.29 It’s a checklist, not proof.

Unlicensed designs: Zippo Japan won’t take for repair a Zippo decorated with someone else’s trademark, logo or character without permission, even when the lighter is genuine, and warns that unlicensed comic-character pieces are common.21

Zippo prices in Japan and tax-free shopping

Tax-free shopping in Japan starts at ¥5,000 before tax, spent at one shop on one day.15 34 A plain Zippo at ¥3,960 or ¥4,260 is ¥3,600 or ¥3,873 before tax, so on its own it falls short.

The saving at stake is the 10% consumption tax: ¥360 on a ¥3,960 Zippo. To reach ¥5,000, add other purchases at the same shop on the same day. Until 31 October 2026, general goods and consumables are counted separately; from 1 November, everything counts together.15 34

A Japanese-design or anime Zippo clears the line by itself if you buy it in person at a tax-free shop. Online orders don’t count, because tax-free needs your passport at the shop.15 Tax-free isn’t duty-free either: it removes only the 10% consumption tax, as our guide to duty-free cigarettes explains.

What changes on 1 November 2026

For anything bought on or after 1 November 2026, Japan uses what it calls the refund method: you pay the full price and get the tax back after a customs check when you leave.35 34 The date you buy decides which rules apply.

Four things matter for a Zippo buyer:

Do the check before bag drop. The tax-free kiosks are in the departure lobby before check-in, and a checked bag can’t be pulled back for it.35 36 Your Zippo is in your pocket anyway.
Every item on the receipt, or nothing. If one item from a receipt is missing, nothing on that receipt is refunded.35
Keep the box. Goods that aren’t used up can be used in Japan and still be claimed, but keep the packaging with the model number so customs can identify them.37
Don’t buy flints or fluid tax-free if you’ll use them. Consumables used in Japan lose the refund for their receipt.35 Fluid can’t be flown at all, and Don Quijote won’t sell tax-free anything that can go neither in the cabin nor in the hold.2 38

The refund comes from the shop, or a refund company it uses, after customs confirms the export. How and when is up to the shop.35 36

Taking a Zippo home on the plane

Japan allows each passenger one small lighter or one small box of safety matches (the two together count as one), carried on your person, never in checked baggage, and no refill fluid or gas.2 A Zippo qualifies because its fluid is soaked into cotton inside the case; oil lighters without that absorbent are banned.39 Asked “Can I put a souvenir lighter in my suitcase?”, Narita Airport says no.39

Our reading: one Zippo per traveller, carried on you. No single rule says so. It follows from the flight rule, the postal rules and, for tax-free goods, the rule that you carry out what you bought.

Several Zippos: Japan’s official list keeps lighters out of checked baggage without saying whether that covers new, never-fuelled ones.2 Airlines differ: AIRDO, which flies only within Japan, accepts unused oil lighters in the hold,43 while Narita allows no lighter in a checked suitcase.39 For a flight home, ask your airline before you count on packing a second one.

Posting them home: Japan Post can’t send lighters or lighter fuel abroad by any international mail, and Yamato’s international parcel service refuses lighters.40 41 Posting tax-free goods home yourself hasn’t counted as taking them out of Japan since April 2025 either.15

At security abroad: Zippo Japan warns that strict airports overseas may confiscate a Zippo’s insert at screening.21 ANA doesn’t carry Zippo lighters on flights to or from Germany or Vienna, whether or not the fuel is absorbed.42

Japan’s rules, and your airline’s, decide the flight out of Japan. For a connecting flight at home, and for later trips, your own country’s rules apply:

Zippo flints, wick and fluid during your trip

A new Zippo comes without fluid.50 51 If it’s a souvenir, you never need to buy any; if you’ll use it on the trip, buy the small can.

Marukai sells refills at open price, which means each shop sets its own, and the same genuine card of six flints nearly doubles in price from one shop to the next.3 4 5

Buy genuine: Marukai says faults caused by non-Zippo fluid or flints aren’t covered by its repair guarantee.3

Fluid: the 133 ml can is ¥770 on Yodobashi.com and ¥1,204.50 at 7-Eleven.54 9 It can’t go on a plane in either bag and can’t be posted,2 40 so buy the small can and plan to use it up. If a lighter has to go before your flight, see how to dispose of a lighter in Japan.

Genuine or fake: the date code and other checks

A genuine Zippo carries Zippo’s free lifetime guarantee. Zippo Japan sends fakes and lighters with imitation parts back unrepaired, with the return postage charged to the sender.21

Three kinds of “Zippo”, and what happens at repair

Zippo Japan’s guarantee page asks for no receipt or guarantee card. We read that as covering a genuine Zippo however it was imported, but the page doesn’t say so; if in doubt, ask Zippo Japan before sending it.21

Reading the date code

Since the mid-1950s every Zippo has carried a date code on the bottom. Today it’s a letter for the month and two digits for the year.55 56

Zippo USA lists the signs of a fake: misspellings, low quality or grainy designs, a date code that doesn’t fit Zippo’s system, and an unrealistically low price.57

Buying a Japanese Zippo online

Marukai warns about fake copies of its online shop and gives three ways to recognise the real one.13

Zippo repairs after you get home

Zippo fixes functional faults free for life, whatever the lighter’s age: “It works or we fix it free”, in Zippo USA’s words. Scratches, dents and worn plating aren’t covered.58 21

In Japan, repairs go by post to Marukai’s desk in Osaka, with no drop-ins,21 so a repair during a short trip isn’t realistic. In the US, Zippo takes repairs through its online repair form; elsewhere, its international distributors page lists who handles repairs in each country.58 59 Fakes and unlicensed character customisations are refused: Zippo USA says it can’t extend its warranty to unauthorised products.21 57

Can I buy a Zippo at a convenience store in Japan?

We found no Zippo lighter on 7-Eleven's website. Genuine Zippo flints (six for ¥610.50) and 133 ml Zippo fluid (¥1,204.50) are on 7-Eleven's nationwide list, but not every store carries them (tax included, September 2026). For the lighter itself, try Yodobashi Camera, Bic Camera or a shop on Zippo Japan's store list.

Do I need ID to buy a Zippo or lighter fluid in Japan?

We found no law that sets an age for buying a lighter, but shops can ask for ID, and you need your passport for tax-free shopping anyway, so carry it. The legal age for smoking in Japan is 20.

Is there an official One Piece, JoJo or Demon Slayer Zippo?

We found no current official one in September 2026, and none for Jujutsu Kaisen, Detective Conan or Dragon Ball either. What turns up are empty Zippo-compatible cases and Zippo-style lighters. Current licensed anime Zippos include Lupin the Third, Evangelion, Studio Ghibli and Black Lagoon.

Can I pack a new, unused Zippo in my checked suitcase?

Don't plan on it. Japan allows one lighter per person, carried on you, and Narita Airport says no lighter may go in a checked suitcase. A few Japanese airlines accept unused oil lighters in the hold, so ask your airline first.

Can I ship Zippos home from Japan?

No. Japan Post can't send lighters or lighter fuel abroad by any international mail, and Yamato's international parcel service refuses lighters. Posting tax-free goods home yourself hasn't counted as export since April 2025.
