MINE Cigarettes in Japan: Where to Buy Them and What They Cost

MINE (峰) has not been sold at a regular Japanese convenience store or tobacco shop since January 2010. The only place to buy it in Japan today is a duty-free counter, and the only confirmed version there is a 10mg tar / 0.8mg nicotine pack priced at ¥5,300 for a carton of 200.12

That’s the short version. The longer version involves a brand that used to be an ordinary Japan Tobacco product, disappeared from shelves, and then reappeared as an everyday item in Taiwan instead.

What is MINE?

That changed in January 2010, when MINE was pulled from regular retail sale inside Japan and restricted to duty-free shops and export markets only.3 It’s this gap — a brand that was once everywhere and then vanished from normal stores overnight — that gives MINE its nickname among Japanese smokers: the “phantom cigarette” (幻のタバコ).

MINE did not stop existing in 2010 — it stopped being sold to people who weren’t leaving the country. The product kept being made. It just moved to a channel most residents never walk through.

Where can you actually buy MINE in Japan?

At duty-free shops, and nowhere else confirmed.

Two operators list it directly: Centrair Duty Free at Chubu Centrair International Airport, and JAPAN DUTY FREE at Narita, which also lists it as carried at Ibaraki Airport and Iwate Hanamaki Airport.12 That’s four specific locations you can confirm before flying, not a general “check the duty-free shop” gesture.

Neither listing offers advance payment. Narita’s own listing marks MINE as “store payment only,” meaning you pay at the counter when you fly, not through an online pre-order system the way some other duty-free tobacco is sold.2

If you’re checking other airports not listed here, MINE not appearing in a shop’s online catalog doesn’t necessarily mean it isn’t on the shelf — but it also doesn’t mean it is. The two operators above are the ones with a direct, checkable listing.

What does the current Japan duty-free MINE actually contain?

Tar 10mg, nicotine 0.8mg, 200 cigarettes per carton, ¥5,300.

This appears to be the only current Japan duty-free version. Older or secondary sources sometimes mention other MINE variants — a stronger “Black” version, a “Platinum” or “Silver” version — but neither Centrair’s nor Narita’s current online listing shows anything beyond the single 10mg/0.8mg product. If a shop has additional variants in stock that aren’t reflected in the online catalog, that would only be confirmed by checking in person.

What does MINE actually taste like?

An almost flavorless start, building to a sharper, peppery finish — that’s the pattern reviewers describe most consistently for the 10mg/0.8mg duty-free version.

A quick note on sourcing here, because it matters: unlike the sections above, there’s no official taste specification from JT or a duty-free retailer — cigarette makers don’t publish flavor profiles. What follows comes from individual smoker reviews on Taiwanese and Chinese-language forums, specifically ones confirmed to be reviewing the Japan duty-free 10mg/0.8mg version, not Taiwan’s separately produced variants. Treat it as a pattern across a small number of independent accounts, not a verified specification.

One detailed review posted on the PTT Tobacco board, explicitly labeled as a Japan airport duty-free purchase, describes the cigarette in three stages: the first third has close to no flavor and barely feels like smoking at all, the middle section develops real tobacco flavor comparable to “Japanese cigarette standard,” and the final third turns noticeably sharper and peppery.4

A separate review on yanpk.com, posted specifically on that site’s Japan duty-free MINE product page, describes a faint milky aroma on opening the pack, with a hint of sourness on close smelling — but pushes back on the idea that MINE has a strong, obvious milk flavor, calling that more marketing expectation than reality. During actual smoking, this reviewer found tobacco and slightly burnt notes dominant, with the milk-like note appearing only occasionally and faintly. This is specifically about the Japan duty-free 10mg/0.8mg version. Taiwan’s locally produced MINE lineup includes other variants — reviews of those aren’t mixed in here, because a stronger or differently formulated Taiwan variant would give a different, and misleading, picture of what you’d actually get buying MINE at a Japanese airport.

Is MINE in Taiwan the same product?

No — Taiwan sells it as an everyday retail item, not a duty-free exclusive.

In Taiwan, MINE is sold in ordinary convenience stores as well as airport duty-free, and production shifted to local Taiwan manufacturing by around 2019.3 That’s the opposite of its status in Japan: in Japan it’s confined to one narrow retail channel, while in Taiwan it’s stocked like any other everyday cigarette brand.

Don’t assume the Taiwan pack and the Japan duty-free pack are interchangeable. They carry the same brand name, but Taiwan’s version is locally produced and reported to include additional variants beyond the single specification confirmed for Japan’s duty-free listing. Treat them as related products from the same brand, not as identical goods sold in two places.

Why did MINE disappear from regular stores in the first place?

The available sourcing doesn’t say. Japan’s own Wikipedia entry on the brand records that the withdrawal happened in January 2010 and that it coincided with the shift to duty-free-and-export-only distribution, but it does not give a stated reason for the decision.3

Here’s the part that needs a clearer source: no publisher-side statement explaining the 2010 withdrawal turned up in this research. Treat any specific explanation you read elsewhere — declining domestic demand, a portfolio decision, anything more specific — as unconfirmed unless it links back to a JT statement or filing, not a retail listing or forum post.
