T-Shop Tobacco (たばこと駄菓子の専門店 Tショップ) is a recently opened local tobacconist in Kokubo, Akashi, a 6-minute walk from Nishi-Akashi Station (西明石駅). The grey gabled shopfront carries a sign that sums up the stock in four words — たばこ, 手巻き, 葉巻, 駄菓子: cigarettes, hand-rolling tobacco, cigars and old-fashioned sweets.
The selection is the draw. Numbered slots of cigarettes run from floor to ceiling, and the shop's own listing counts more than 500 brands — from everyday Mevius, Kent, Lark and Parliament to imports and minor brands that are hard to find elsewhere — plus heated-tobacco devices from IQOS, Ploom and glo. The shop says it wants to hear which brands customers are after, so it can stock them.
Rolling your own is well covered: a wall of RYO tobacco and the accessories to go with it, Japanese cut tobacco for the kiseru, a humidor of single cigars and a case of little cigars. The shop says it is happy to help first-timers choose a brand and learn to roll, and that some cigars are sold one at a time. Next to the tobacco there is dagashi — nostalgic Japanese penny sweets, from old favourites to new releases. Payment is cash only, and the shop is closed on Sundays and public holidays.
