Smoking allowed inside
Marley Coffee & Chocolate Main Store (coffee&chocolate Marley 本店) is a late-night coffee shop in Susukino, Sapporo’s entertainment district. It opened on 2 September 2011 as the first of Marley’s cafés and roasts its own coffee from beans bought around the world and makes its own chocolate from raw cacao beans. The shop calls it a hideaway: a place of your own, apart from the noise of the district, open until 2 AM.
Smoking is allowed inside. The shop’s own page lists the whole shop as 喫煙可 (smoking allowed), and a glass ashtray stands on the nearest table in the first photo. Smok has seen no separate smoking room, so expect to smoke at your seat. The shop also likes to pair coffee with cigars — a post of 2018 shows a cigar in a glass ashtray beside a cup — but Smok does not know whether it keeps cigars to sell, so ask before counting on one.
The cups are part of the shop: it serves coffee in vintage porcelain — its posts name Wedgwood and Royal Copenhagen — and says the two Susukino shops hold more than a hundred cups between them, so you can ask for the one you like. The same menu runs through the evening: single-origin drip coffee, cold brew, bean-to-bar chocolate and terrine. You can also take roasted beans and chocolate bars home — the shop’s site lists them as its take-away menu.
Opening Hours
The shop is open until 2:00 AM, so each day’s hours run into the early hours of the next morning.
Hours shown in Japan Standard Time, as the shop gives them on its own site: 3:00 PM to 2:00 AM, no closed days. The shop’s posts show it shut on 1 January and open shorter hours on New Year’s Eve and 2 January in recent years, so check its Instagram, @marley.coffee.chocolate, before a visit around New Year.
Good to Know
Smoking
The shop’s own page lists smoking as allowed (喫煙可) and makes no split into smoking and non-smoking seats, so assume smoke throughout. Smok has not seen a separate smoking room, and does not know whether heated-tobacco devices are treated any differently from cigarettes. Not every Marley shop allows smoking — see “Marley’s Other Shops” below.
Hours
Open every day from 3:00 PM to 2:00 AM; the shop’s page says it has no closed days. In recent years its posts have shown it shut on 1 January and open shorter hours (to 11:00 PM) on New Year’s Eve and 2 January, so check Instagram around the holidays.
Seats and Booking
The shop has 20 seats — 6 at the counter and 14 at tables. It takes reservations by phone, on 011-600-1902, or by direct message on its Instagram, @marley.coffee.chocolate. Booking is not necessary, though: the owner of Smok has been to both Marley shops and there were always seats.
Payment and Parking
The shop accepts cash, credit cards, various e-money and QR payment services. It has no parking; use a coin parking lot nearby.
What’s on the Menu
The Main Store and the East Store serve the same menu, according to the shops’ own site, which also says that contents and prices can change. Smok does not list prices; ask at the shop for today’s menu.
Coffee, Roasted In-House — Beans from around the world roasted by Marley to suit each origin, brewed in different drip styles depending on the bean and the roast. The menu on the shop’s site lists medium roasts (Brazil Premium Chocolat, which it calls its most popular, and Ethiopia G1) and dark roasts (Guatemala Oriente Natural and Indonesia Mandheling Bintang Lima), the day’s Marley blend, a French blend, iced coffee, and milk coffees such as café au lait, café crème and Vienna coffee.
Cold Brew and Specials — Cold-brewed coffee in a limited number of cups a day, including an aromatic Ethiopian cold brew served in a wine glass, plus Irish coffee, cocoa, café mocha and royal milk tea.
Chocolate Made from Cacao Beans — Marley makes its chocolate itself, from the cacao bean to the finished bar — bean-to-bar — and sells it in the shop, including as bars to take away: bars at 68% cacao from Vietnam, Costa Rica and the Philippines, and truffles with a liqueur flavour that changes from batch to batch.
Terrine — A rich chocolate terrine made with its own chocolate and a smooth cheese terrine, each limited to a set number a day; the shop describes the cheese terrine as a very good match for coffee.
A Personal Note from Smok’s Owner
This is a more premium coffee shop, with slightly higher prices, but the products really are high quality. My favourite is their small chocolate dessert — incredibly rich, and every bite is worth it.
Getting There
From Susukino Station
About five minutes on foot from exit 4 or 5 of Susukino Station on the Sapporo Municipal Subway, according to the shop’s own site. The shop’s glass door opens straight onto the street, as in the first photo.
By Streetcar
About three minutes on foot from Shiseikan Shogakko-mae stop on the Sapporo City Tram, according to the shop’s own site.
By Car
The shop has no parking of its own, and says to use a nearby coin parking lot. Smok has not checked which lots are closest.
Marley’s Other Shops
Marley’s second shop, about 400 metres away in a straight line on the second floor of the Lydia Building. Same menu, same hours, and smoking is allowed there too; it also keeps a cigar humidor, according to a post of June 2020. See its page for photos and directions.
Marley Museum Shop (Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art)
The group’s third café, inside the Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art, is non-smoking — its own page says 禁煙 — and keeps the museum’s hours, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, closed on the museum’s closed days. Smok does not list it on the map.
Marley’s newest shop, opened on 7 July 2026 in Maruyama, about 2.4 km west of here in a straight line. Smoking is allowed at every seat, according to the shop’s own post on Google Maps. See its page for photos and directions.
